Night trek to Skandagiri

It was around 11: 30 PM .  Alarm was snoozed for the 5th time. Yeah, I slept at 9 PM, so that I can get up at 11:30 and start getting ready to Skandagiri trek. Finally  I was out of my bed. Got freshened. Meanwhile I got a call from  Shreevatsa and he was waiting for me.

So we left our house (Chandra layout) and headed to Marathhalli. Khanij and Sandeep got into the car at Nayandanahalli and Prakash Shanbouge at Marathalli.  That was our last pickup. It was around 12 :15 that we left Marathhalli.  On the  way  khanij was very hungry. ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಟೀ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತೋ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ನಿಲಿಸ್ರೋ ” . He badly wanted a cup of tea :). So near Hebbal we took a short break and Tea was served to him 😛 from a roadside tea vendor.

We continued our journey and khanij started telling stories of  his bike trip (18 days, 3500 kms  across karnataka). Around 2:30 AM we reached the base .

Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is an ancient mountain fortress located approximately 70 km from Bangalore city, and 3 km from Chikballapur in the Indian state ofKarnataka. It is off Bellary Road ( NH 7 HyderabadBangalore Highway), and overlooks Nandi HillsMuddenahalli, and Kanivenarayanapura. The peak is at an altitude of about 1350 meters.

Local villagers took 100 RS to park our vehicle in their field !! Its better to pay them rather than  parking it somewhere else. Many villagers were asking for guides. Since we had already read LOTS of blogs on internet , we were pretty sure about the path. Basically you need to take diversion next to the temple. (right side) and then walk for say 1kms  and then take left diversion.

From there its pretty straight forward and just follow the trail. To our surprise a dog helped us all the way till top. Since this was our first time trek to Skandagiri,  we were skeptic about the path.  But the dog was our lead and he took us from base to top . He was awarded well though 🙂 with chips and biscuit 😀

Just make sure , to look for signs/ arrow marks. You will never be LOST 😀 . We took around 2 hours to reach top. There were many other people who had already put bonfire.  I thank them personally as it was very cold and we badly wanted some heat ! .

Around 4 30 AM we made it to the peak. Took some rest as we were little tired.  Around 5 20 AM sky was getting brighter and we knew that It was time for sunrise !! . But for our badluck sky was covered with clouds and we did not get a clear visibility of sunrise ! But we enjoyed each and every moment of the time that we stayed .

It was around 6 30 AM that we decided to descend. Shreevatsa was dull and got to know that he lost his mobile somewhere in the trail 😦 .  But the interesting part was that  it was still reachable and I was able to get ring when I tried calling  his cell. This kept us a little hope that we might get his cell.

We called his mobile all the way from peak to base but did not find it, only to know that it was in the car !!!!!!! and he did not take it 😛 :D. Total of  80 missed calls was logged in his cell !!! !

Anyways that was another moment for us to be happy 😀 . His cell contacts was  intact :).

We started heading towards bangalore. On the way we visited Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple .

It was around 11 AM that I reached home  dropping all.  That moment when you reach home, take bath ,have lunch and doze off!! ah.. that cannot be expressed in words 🙂 🙂

So if you are planning to visit place do it now!!! check the weather condition once before leaving. June – August in not preferable to go there. Rest any days you can go and enjoy the scenic beauty of the place.

Things to carry :  Jerking , caps, Water  bottles ,Snacks, torch.

PS: Make sure not to put any plastics there.  Lets keep the place clean and admire nature.

Regards ,

  1. When i had been to that place with my friend which we had not planned properly we reached @ 11 am. Two kids asked if we wanted guides when we refused, they just showed us the wrong trail to get to the top. Which we realised only after climbing 3/4th of the peak we did not want to get down so we made way through thorny bushes and at a place a steep climb and then we reached the summit totally exhausted. Even though we could not see any cloud cover as it was afternoon It was still memorable for our tough climb.
